Trip Overview

The Umbwe Route is the steepest and most challenging Kilimanjaro route, recommended for experienced trekkers seeking a short, adventurous and less crowded climb. This route approaches the mountain from the south and quickly gains altitude, offering dramatic views and an exciting trekking experience through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and glacier zones. Our experienced Kilimanjaro guides ensure high safety standards, including oxygen cylinder, pulse oximeter, first aid kit and Flying Doctors emergency evacuation support.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Cave Bivouac Camp (2,850m) 🌿

Depart from Moshi in the morning to Umbwe Gate for registration. Meet your professional mountain crew including guides, cooks and porters. Begin trekking through dense rainforest with moss-covered trees and rich vegetation. The trail is steep and adventurous, making Umbwe ideal for experienced hikers.

Day 2: Cave Bivouac Camp (2,850m) – Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Continue trekking along a ridge leaving the forest behind and entering moorland vegetation. Arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, surrounded by giant senecio plants and spectacular valley views.

• Habitat: Moorland
• Overnight: Barranco Camp


Day 3: Barranco Camp (3,950m) – Karanga Valley (4,200m)

After breakfast climb the famous Barranco Wall, an exciting scramble requiring some use of hands. Continue through alpine terrain before descending into Karanga Valley for acclimatization.

• Habitat: Alpine desert
• Overnight: Karanga Camp


Day 4: Karanga Valley (4,200m) – Barafu Camp (4,600m)

Trek through dry alpine desert landscape toward Barafu Camp. Enjoy spectacular views of Kibo peak glaciers including Heim, Kersten and Decken glaciers. Prepare for midnight summit attempt.

• Overnight: Barafu Camp


Day 5: Barafu Camp (4,600m) – Stella Point – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m) 🏔️

Begin the summit attempt at midnight. Trek through the arctic zone to Stella Point before continuing to the summit of Africa at Uhuru Peak. Celebrate your achievement and descend to Mweka Camp.

• Walking time: 10–14 hours
• Habitat: Arctic summit zone
• Overnight: Mweka Camp


Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m) – Mweka Gate (1,500m) – Moshi 🌳

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificates before transferring back to Moshi.
